This year, I was so determined not to break the spirit of small town, all-American, old fashioned country fair fun that is so often missing from our modern life that afterwards, I refused to herd my hungry troops to McDonalds. The craving for a simple, homemade meal led me to a totally unexpected place. Through the misty rain, the colorful glow of the neon lights beckoned and welcomed us into the warm dining rooms of the Modern Snack Bar that have served hungry visitors for over half a century. Although the burgers no longer cost 57 cents, the friendly atmosphere hasn’t changed and dishes like Long Island duck, mashed turnips, and creamy clam chowder satisfy more than the appetite; they comfort the soul. The children felt right at home among the bustle of waitresses, chattering families, and occasional clanking of dishware. We savored every bite of food, and before leaving a woman approached the table and remarked that my children were wonderfully behaved. After I made certain she was speaking to me, I thanked her and beamed at my children. My daughter then smirked and said, “Any kid will behave when you hand them a dish of giant onion rings”. And though I hate to admit it, I suppose that’s true. For more information, contact:
