White
churches with towering
steeples stood tall in so many coastal New England towns of the last
century; they were the heart, the soul, the foundation of an
established community.
Old Steeple
in Aquebogue is one of those comforting landmarks, a place people
gathered to celebrate love and new life, to offer joyful praise or a
desperate prayer; a place whose history is wrought with struggle,
tragedy, and ultimately survival. A vignette of the life
experiences we all share existed within its walls.
Today,
the church is far from being the hollow symbol of a former time; its
members continue to support family, faith, and community through
religious service and outreach, often playing host to BBQs, antique
fairs, and soup suppers. Children playing in the back are a
reminder that Old Steeple is also a preschool that successfully
merges love and education.
The
leadership has continued to keep a congregational spirit alive and
relevant in our modern age by blending traditional values with a
forward thinking attitude towards science, culture, and forms of
worship.
This
very old and beautiful meeting place is still standing strong today
because its people still believe that they are called to change the
world by loving and serving others.
