A Day in
the Country:
Organic
Gardening,
Herbs & the Garden of Eve
Story & Photos by Joanna Sawaya

I
drive down an idyllic stretch of road; a bright
landscape dotted with pumpkins and lined with proud
cornstalks and happy sunflowers.
When I arrive,
little clouds of earth kick up around my shoes and I’m
greeted by overeager goats and the sweet, subtle scent
of mint. |

An Organic
Farm Dedicated to the Community
|
For a girl who grew up just minutes from
one of the fastest paced cities in the world, life in the country never loses
its appeal.
This is one of my favorite destinations;
Garden of Eve on the rural North Fork
of Long Island, NY where young environmental advocates Chris and Eve Kaplan-Walbrecht
turned organic gardening into a farm dedicated to providing the area with a
variety of produce, flowers, and herbs cultivated sustainably and without
chemical herbicides and pesticides. The couple also educates through classes,
events, and demonstrations throughout the year.
By participating in the community
supported agriculture CSA, I was able to affordably share in their
harvest, and feel good about doing my part to preserve our beautiful land and
feed my family healthy, nutritious fruits and vegetables. Each week I picked up
my portion of freshly picked produce, assisted by the farm’s friendly,
hardworking staff. It was truly a pleasure to enjoy food of that quality, and
exciting to introduce new ingredients to my kitchen, such as kale and chocolate
mint.
My experience at Garden of Eve has
always been what a day in the country should be; fresh air, friendly faces,
natural beauty, good, wholesome food. Whether you live on the North Fork, the
city, or anywhere in between, make this one of your destinations as well; its
one you can feel good about.
