Rising Out
of the Pumpkin Patch
|
|
We
were driving down Sound Avenue on a crisp Autumn
afternoon in late September, passing pumpkin farms
(or patches)
on every corner, but the one that made my brothers jump
out of their seats and stick their excited heads out the
window was Rottkamp’s Fox
Hollow Farm and their trailer beds of
giant pumpkins.
My mom pulled over to the side onto the grassy field and I ran over with my camera to the huge orange giants that were big enough for us to sit on. Atlantic Giant Pumpkins can be 6 feet around and weigh over 500 pounds; kind of big to fit in the car, but we were determined; even if that meant squishing together in the back while our pumpkin took over our seats. We also took some time to venture into the small store and learn about many other varieties; squashes, twisted gourds and jack-be-littles. Fox Hollow also offers edible pumpkins for cooking; homemade pumpkin pie is one of our families favorite treats.
I still laugh remembering my brothers
rolling that giant pumpkin up my driveway. Having
something that big sitting on your porch is really
exciting for kids, especially when all the neighbors’
kids come on Halloween and say “Where’d you get the
giant pumpkin!” Every year it’s off to the pumpkin patch to go
to get a giant pumpkin and it’s a great place for
Autumn memories and fall fun.
